History
The Government Arts College, Salem, is one of the oldest higher education institutions in Tamil Nadu, established in 1857. It began as a Zilla School during the British colonial period to provide western education to local youth
The institution was elevated to a high school in 1871 and achieved second-grade college status in 1879 under the University of Madras. It became a first-grade college in 1944. Notably, the college received autonomous status in 1999. Today, it stands as a premier historic landmark, offering diverse undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programs to thousands of rural students.
